Taking an early affinity for athletics and science, Caleb accepted a soccer scholarship to Stetson University. After graduating with honors, he attended the University of Florida College of Medicine where he took a keen interest in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Subsequently, he was accepted into a highly competitive Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery program at Indiana University. During his second year of residency, Caleb was diagnosed with a rare form of metastatic cancer.
Always the fighter, Caleb accepted this challenge with his characteristic smile and began a three-and-a-half-year battle for his life. During this time, Caleb continued his passion for medicine, publishing multiple scholarly articles and ultimately completing his memoirs in his book “Case Study: Me.”
Caleb is survived by his mom, Ricki Taylor (Ken), his father Joe Matthews (Amelia), brother Josh Matthews (Katie), sister Teal Matthews, Grandmother Lillian Matthews and his loving dog Hank.
