On September 16-17, 2017, Vicki Dailey will peddle 82-miles roundtrip from Maryland to Pennsylvania to raise money for and awareness of NETs.  The trek is a tribute to her sister Debbie’s seven-year journey with carcinoid cancer.

“When I am going up those hard inclines, I think this is nothing compared to what she is going through,” said Vicki. “That helps me push through.”

Vicki said Debbie faces her cancer journey with optimism, perseverance, and strength. When Debbie’s symptoms first appeared in her early 40s, she was told she was experiencing early menopause.  “Debbie knew something wasn’t right. She kept pressing. She was determined to save her own life,” said Vicki. “Doctors weren’t listening. She made the rounds for three years.  She was 45 when she was diagnosed. “

Vicki says her sister is in good spirits even though she has re-entered treatment. Advanced imaging in Texas revealed Debbie’s cancer had progressed. She enrolled in a clinical trial of PRRT in New York.

With a sign on her bicycle and a NETRF shirt on her back, Vicki talks to people along the rail-trail route, telling them about her family’s experience with this widely misunderstood, commonly misdiagnosed disease. Her story has motivated strangers to dig into their pockets on the spot.

Vicki learned how to conduct a fundraiser at NETRF’s website. “I went to the webpage and it had all the info on how to start a fundraiser. It had a form for my website and a section on how to post to Facebook. I was able to get donations from that,” said Vicki.

Vicki will ride this year with her partner and two sisters-in-law, together honoring Debbie’s courage and bravery. “I enjoy all of it—planning it, recruiting riders, raising money and awareness,” said Vicki. “Also, the feeling that she is not alone.”
