As a result of our ongoing collaboration with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), we have awarded a grant to Dr. Xianxin Hua of the University of Pennsylvania – Abramson Cancer Center. As the world’s largest cancer research membership organization, the AACR, with its funding commitment from NETRF, solicited innovative neuroendocrine cancer proposals from its over 35,000 members. The announcement of the award was made at the recent 5th Focus on Neuroendocrine Tumors Conference at the University of Pennsylvania and later at the AACR Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
After careful scientific review of the responses to an international request for proposals, Dr. Hua was chosen as the grant recipient for his project titled, Targeting Neuroendocrine Tumors By Suppressing a Cell-Surface Protease. The focus of this research is how the cancer promoting protein Mme can be suppressed by coordinated actions of two tumor suppressors, Menin and Daxx. Because unchecked activation of Mme can lead to neuroendocrine tumors, Dr. Hua’s research is an important stepping stone in understanding how Mme may be targeted to achieve effective therapies for neuroendocrine tumors.
