Yes, we only release one RFA per year.

Investigator awards are medium size grants. These grants are in the amount of $270,000 and last for two years ($135,000/year). These proposals have usually two, or three smaller, aims that provide work requiring two years to complete. They might have only one PI with or without collaborators. They are comparable to an NIH R21 grant.

The Mentored award is a medium size grant designed to encourage early-career investigators to pursue neuroendocrine research. This grant is a total of $100,000 for two years ($50,000/year). Applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent degree) in a related field, and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral or professional degree. Eligible applicants must hold a full-time, mentored research position with the title of postdoctoral fellow, clinical research fellow, or the equivalent. They must work under the auspices of a mentor at an academic, medical, or research institution within the US or abroad. These proposals typically have two aims that require two years to complete.

Pilot awards are the smallest grants we award. These grants are $90,000 and last one year. These proposals have usually one, or two smaller, aims that provide work requiring one year to complete. They might have only one PI with or without collaborators. They are usually proof-of-concept, pilot and feasibility or high-risk/high-reward type grants.

NO! All Letters of Intent (LOIs) must be submitted via proposalCENTRAL (proposalCentral.com). LOIs that do not go through proposalCENTRAL are disqualified.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate extensions, and late submissions will not be considered.

The NETRF RFA employs a 2-step process: the 1st step is the submission of a Competitive Letter of Intent (LOI). The purpose of the LOI is to identify projects with the greatest scientific potential without requiring applicants first to submit a full application. A limited number of applicants whose LOI is deemed most meritorious will move to the 2nd step and will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Please read each program’s guidelines to help you decide which type of grant to choose. If you still have questions please contact us at grants@netrf.org

Yes, NETRF grants can be combined and/or used to supplement elements of a research proposal with a larger scope, as long as there is no overlap between the proposals. The applicant will need to provide documentation proving lack of overlap.

NETRF organizes an annual 2-day Research Symposium in the Boston area. It is typically held in the Fall.

This requirement is very important and the funders that support these awards expect to hear, and potentially meet with their Awardees and ample time is provided to plan for attendance. However, if attendance is not possible the Director of Research should be contacted to discuss the circumstances. In such cases, we strongly encourage that another person in the laboratory who is very familiar with and/or also working on the project, and that can enter the US, attends and presents at the Symposium.

We do NOT accept applications from the biotech, pharmaceutical industry, or for-profit life sciences companies.

Postdocs are eligible for the Mentored Research Award. Please see the program guidelines for this award.

Payments are made every six months following satisfactory progress reports and 10% of the grant is withheld from the final payment until final reports and documents are submitted and approved.

Every six months grantees must submit a three-part progress report that contains 1) a detailed narrative describing progress made toward the research goals/aims and highlighting successes, problems and continencies, 2) a Milestones Report must also be provided demonstrating appropriate progress meeting proscribed benchmarks and experimental milestones. Updates of publications, additional funding, career advancement and other metrics are also required and should be entered into the Awardee’s ORCID profile. 3) a detailed financial statement is also required. Post-award reporting of long-term outcomes are required at one, three and five years following the end of the grant.

We only offer up to 10% of indirect costs to grants that are more than $150,000 USD (Accelerator and Investigator Awards only). We do not pay indirect costs for Pilot or Mentored Award grants.

Yes, you can. Such details are discussed in the Research Contract between the NETRF and the Institution.

No, just like its applicants, we reach out to experts all over the world.

Only one primary PI is allowed, and they will have to complete the form.  For collaborative projects, Co-Investigators are allowed; however, NETRF can enter into a contract agreement with only one institution, and subsequent subcontracting is the responsibility of the PI’s institution.

You may submit more than one LOI if you apply for different categories (e.g. one LOI for the Accelerator program and one for the Pilot program). However, there can be no overlap between the two applications. You may submit only one LOI per program.

You cannot hold more than one active NETRF-funded award at any time. However, you may submit an application while holding an active award as long as the funding periods will not overlap. Any special circumstances regarding this will need to be discussed with the Director of Research.
